Never had back pain but wonder how well your back functions?
Or had back pain and wonder where your strength and weaknesses lie?

This personal assessment is intended to give you an indication of the function, primarily flexibility, in some of the muscles supporting your back. It is in no way intended as a substitute for medical screening or assessment. If you feel pain in performing any of the movements, please stop immediately. You should consult a physician before starting this assessment.

In order to get an overall view of your risk category for back injury, you have to complete and score (1-4) each of the three assessments below:

What does your Overall Risk Category mean?
1
You are in a low risk category, and are least likely to suffer from back strain. Keep up the good work!
2
You are in low-medium risk category, and are unlikely to suffer from back strain, if you continue to work on your flexibility. You should have no difficulty scoring excellent on all three tests.
3
You are in a medium–high risk category. You have significant risk for future back problems, particularly if your right and left test scores were different. You need to do the suggested exercises…Start slowly and be persistent.
4
You are in the highest risk category and probably suffer from back pain. You need to do the suggested exercises…Start slowly and be persistent.

Please consult a physician before starting this or any other exercise program. You may wish to print a copy of this page after completing the assessments.
